One evening, on a flight from Tokyo to Hawaii, my copilot and I were busily pointing out shooting stars to each other. There were more than usual that night. We would keep asking each other “did you make a wish?” every single time. I wrote this poem during that flight. The word “starfish” just popped into my head. Some of my other poems, you’ll notice, also have a somewhat nautical theme.

WISH UPON A STARFISH
"Wish upon a starfish," said a crab beneath the sea. He'd come across a starfish and felt lucky as could be. "I wish I could live someplace else quite far away and not So close to land where I could wind up in a cooking pot."
"Wish upon a starfish," said a turtle swimming by. "I know what I would like," he said and breathed a gentle sigh. "I'd like to be a member of a very special group. We'd watch out for each other; not end up as turtle soup."
"Wish upon a starfish," said a lobster from below. "I don't want to be a lobster 'cause in fact you never know. With just an instant's carelessness a trap could capture me. And in hot water I'd wind up and that's the end of me."
"Wish upon a starfish," said a sunfish to a clam. "Whereupon the shellfish laughed," for he was quite a ham. "I'd wish for legs, you know, so I could run and take a powder For I've no wish to someday find myself in someone's chowder."
The starfish smiled as she was listening to the many wishes Of all the creatures swimming by; of all the little fishes And she alone wished nothing; she was quite content to be The wishing star for others who inhabited the sea.
